The Servant

DylerPlummer - 12-24-2003 at 09:38 AM

This band from England are very similar to ImaRobot (i think ).. Have a look at the video and tell me what you think..

draconian - 12-24-2003 at 11:10 AM

They're kind of "Save A Prayer" era Duran Duran. Similar sound. I think Ima Robot pushes things a lot further musically, though. Then again, you will hear me say this about just about any band Ima Robot is compared to--you have to get pretty art punk to be more compositionally adventurous than the 'Bot, in my opinion!

DylerPlummer - 12-24-2003 at 11:21 AM

Believe me they're nothing like Duran Duran (please they were never good back then and now sixty years latetr i'm sure they're).. It's hard to tell from one song on a video i know but i've seen the Servant nearly 40 times live and although i've only seen ImaRobot 3 times (it'll be a lot more when they tour around here again).. LIVE they are very similar. When we went to ImaRobot at the Barfly the first thing quite a few of my friends said was ... "They remind me of the Servant".. So like i said i know it's hard listening to one song on a vid but.......

draconian - 12-24-2003 at 11:36 AM

Wahhhh, I love Duran Duran! No irony, even. Straight up love them.

I'll look for more of The Servant. From that song, I could hear the Ima Robot sound in the chorus more than the individual verses.

DylerPlummer - 12-24-2003 at 12:25 PM

If you want to email me your address i'll be happy to send you some of there stuff (believe me you will like them.. Ha ha.)

lomax - 12-25-2003 at 09:58 AM

if we are recomending - check out 'lomax' at www.93records.com they are wicked. they share my name which is cool, and they rule. like gangs of four, the jam and yeah yeah yeahs. they are worth checking out.

RoboticTerrorSTD - 12-25-2003 at 04:23 PM

i personally didn't think they were similar to ima robot. but they did sound ok

DylerPlummer - 12-26-2003 at 02:09 AM

Like i said before it is hard to tell by listening to one track.. But believe me live there are a lot of similarities... When they play in London again i'll be bugging Lomax to go.. If anybody wants to hear (see ) more have a look here (it's a French site but click on Artist)...

I'm with you Drac, I love Duran Duran. How could you not like John Taylor! I remember in 82' ( I was 12 )when I first got MTV (when it was cool and no commercials) and they played "Planet Earth"! I loved that video-they all wore cool clothes and had crazy hair! Then "Hungry like the Wolf" came out and I thought they were such a fun and cute little band. I use to love watching Dale Bozzio in Missing Persons singing "Words"! The plastic bowls on her boobs were great!:D

Andy Taylor was my man. I like a guy who can carry of the platinum blonde look and play synth parts written for only one hand.

Not sure, but you may be talking about Nick Rhodes there Draccy...

I use to love watching Dale Bozzio in Missing Persons singing "Words"!

We lived in suburban/rural area east of LA, and at 15 decided to go do Hollywood ala Nicolas Cage/Valleygirl style, and ended up near the palace one night when Missing Persons was playing, and Dale Bozzio was exiting the side doors in a memorable fur (hopefully fake), and we got to stand in her presence for a brief moment. She was so tiny, and I was just a teenager. Now something like 18 years later I find out that my office managers brother has played drums for Missing Persons recently (I need to find out if he was the original drummer, or just fill-in now).

as for The Servant, I really didn't hear Botness, or Duraness, but I did hear a Pet Shop Boy voice with Brief moments of Radiohead, and Oasis. I enjoyed the song concept of an orchestra in the head even if it is in the "key of hell":). A lot of musicians experience that, and have different variations on what's in their heads. Lyrics were simple, but the lead singer has charisma that pulls it off. By the way, I hate comparing bands to others, but when needed it's real easy.

draconian - 12-28-2003 at 01:50 PM

Right, I meant Nick Rhodes. When I was typing that up last night, it actually gave me pause to write Andy Taylor.

Neuwave - 12-28-2003 at 02:03 PM

Man, those were the days though. Think I'm gonna dust off the old cassettes. Tel Aviv was always a fav, and Tiger Tiger 2 of the very few instrumentals they had, if not only.

MichelleRene - 12-28-2003 at 05:59 PM

Neuwave, that is so cool you did the "Valley Girl" thing. I would have loved to have met Dale Bozzio (wasn't she a former playmate?). I know it's cheesey but I love that movie. I had such a crush on Nick Cage in that movie-I also loved the Plimsouls!!!!Those songs were so heart felt at the time. The club they're in when they played reminds me of this club called The Depot here in Baltimore.

Oh, now I'm getting excited talking about the 80's again. I'm going to have to dig out my old videos! I almost get a high watching them!!!

Wow, is Missing Persons still doing appearances? The original drummer was Dale Bozzio's (former?) husband Terry Bozzio (great Drummer). Man, I miss those days-atleast there is VH1 classics on satellite TV.:D

Daaaang!!:D

You know what I just saw a commercial on VH1 about Berlin on some new show in January, and it dawned on me that it was Berlin, not Missing Persons that he drummed for.

MichelleRene - 12-30-2003 at 02:27 PM

Yah, I think they are suppose to have a show on VH1 where they reunite some of the old 80's bands to play a show together. Berlin is one of them-she's got a killer voice and great hair!

Sometimes on VH1 Classics they show old videos of Madness, early Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, The Damned, Lords of the New Church, and such. I taped a bunch of old videos-when I'm sad I watch them and they cheer me up. Puts butterflies in my stomach!:P

Neuwave - 12-31-2003 at 01:02 PM

I've stumbled upon some of those videos too on VH1. So hard to believe those days are so long ago, yet we were there. Getting old is weird. I often trip out, because right now I'm living next door to Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, and it is very surreal to be taking the trash out, and look up to see him waving at me when I used to see him on MTV when I was 13, and wait by the radio to record his songs on old cassette tapes.

MichelleRene - 1-2-2004 at 09:46 AM

Wow, that's so cool. I can't imagine seeing that guy in DEVO living next door to me. I would have to laugh and break out into song "Freedom of choice...is what you got". I was an MTV junkie too. That era brings back such fond memories.

Yeah, getting old sucks. But actually I think I'm happier now than I've ever been. I think getting older brings a sense of stability and tranquility. My nephew is 21 and I wouldn't want to be his age in this era.

I wish they'd do another 80's big band tour this summer!

You're absolutely right Michelle. I wouldn't trade my peace of mind for anything right now. Don't get me wrong there's still a little turbulence here, and there, but able to handle it gracefully.:)

MichelleRene - 1-7-2004 at 07:52 AM

Yeah, it's great when you get older. You seem to know what you want out of life and what makes you happy. And, now if you go out and make an ass of yourself dancing to 80's music at a club with all the 21 year olds, you don't give a crap!

I was at this club called Depot (where they play GOOD 80's (like Front 242, Skinny Puppy and early Cure) music on Friday nights and this girl had the "Molly Ringwold" (via "Breakfast Club";) down perfect. I guess she was a toddler when the movie came out! Pretty funny! I need to get that move down------;)

Neuwave - 1-7-2004 at 10:28 AM

I don't want to take over this thread, but man michelle I could talk about the 80's for days. I know the dance you're talking about. I was just trying to remember what the music was. First, I was thinking Wang Chung, but that was the running scene, so it had to be when they took over the library, and I think that song was an instrumental, but it kicked ass. I may have to U2U(speaking of U2 wasn't WAR, RED ROCK, and UNFORGETTABLE FIRE great albums? :D) you I could take up some Gigabytes when it comes to the 80's.

lomax - 1-8-2004 at 11:06 AM

i think thats a date you got yourself there michelle

MichelleRene - 1-8-2004 at 12:33 PM

Hey Neuwave, I think we should put up a topic on 80's stuff, to talk about all the fun music and one hit wonders. And we could turn on TBS or TNT this weekend, to watch "The Breakfast Club" (it's on like every weekend). Yeah, gotta love the 80's! I also love when Molly is at the dance in "Sixteen Candles" and Anthony Michael Hall dances around her, he was "very hot, very hot".

I just put up some 80's inspired vintage (womens) clothing on Ebay.I'm so inspired by that era!!! I sell under SheVampsVintage. I'm finally going out on my own with no business partner like last time. What a disaster that was. Some of it is a little Gothy, but I love that part of the 80's too. (Tones on Tail, Bauhaus) Going to those kind of clubs in the late 80's was so much fun. They still have a couple of clubs here that cater to that type of music and look, like The Orpheus and Depot. I may have to drag my girl Char out again. She's been my 80's compadre since 1982!(we met in the 6th. grade when I asked her for the lyrics to "Photograph". We've been best buds ever since.) Hey, I heard that the Stray Cats were getting back together, is that true? I know Setzer did a X-Mas tour, but is that all?

20 years later... that band seems pretty rad Lomax. I'll have to try and purchase it with my next dancing check. thanks.

DylerPlummer - 1-9-2004 at 05:19 PM

Michelle.. The Stray Cats are playing in London on the 17th July and it's already sold out.. So yep they're back..
saw them a few times when they first came over (ooh that was a few years ago now.. Scary)

MichelleRene - 1-10-2004 at 02:40 PM

Ahhhhh..................you're so lucky to have the Stray Cats in London!! I'm so jealous! I got to see them in like 91' or something-after their big hay-day. But none the less they were awesome! I love the pompadores, creepers and leopard sports coat Brian Setzer use to wear. Ah, maybe they'll tour here!!!!!

Schwowsers - 2-10-2004 at 08:05 PM

I love The Servant. I'm quite surprised to see them mentioned here as they don't seem very well known. I don't really think they have much in common with Ima Robot, though, other than the fact that their debut album kicks ass, too ;). I think I might like their two EPs more than their debut album, though. Anyhoo, great band and you folks should definitely give them a listen.

As for other bands, give Robots in Disguise a listen, too! They're on the same label as The Servant, Recall, so you can hear some clips at www.recallgroup.com. Just click on Artists and then select Robots in Disguise. They're a fun band. New album coming out in April, too!

DylerPlummer - 2-11-2004 at 02:06 AM

Bloody hell... Schwowsers where do you live (i mean country)?
They're playing in London tomorrow night at Missdemeanours at Neighbourhood..

Schwowsers - 2-11-2004 at 08:45 AM

I live in the US, which is very unfortunate considering that most of the bands I like are from Europe and rarely play here, if ever. If you're going to the gig, have fun!

DylerPlummer - 2-11-2004 at 08:54 AM

The US.. Fantastic.. I love the Servant they maybe playing NY,LA and Austin this year so you may get to see them after all.. Next weekend i'm going to Paris to see them..
I won't be going to Robots in Disguise tomorrow as i'm going to see a band called Gobsausage..

DylerPlummer - 2-11-2004 at 09:30 AM

Gobsauage are madder than mad.. They have one of the best websites.. http://www.gobsausage.com Their gigs are a riot every time we go and see 'em it's a great night out, they're nice freindly people, but the only thing is.. They're shit.. Ha ha.. They're so bad that they're great.

MichelleRene - 2-11-2004 at 09:47 AM

Oh my....I checked out thier website...whoa! The nasty wack off noises under photos is gross!Ewwww! Does the girl perform without a shirt? Funny website....I imagine they would be a trip to see live. Are they going for the Lords of Acid -sex type show? I love early Lords of Acid (Lust)

DylerPlummer - 2-11-2004 at 09:58 AM

Erm and that's apparently the singer.. Yuk.. Like i said they are totally mad.. I don't know the Lords of Acid so i can't compare..

MichelleRene - 2-11-2004 at 10:10 AM

Whoa!

They remind me a little of Lords of Acid. Their music is very sexual/techno/Rave. I really like their first CD "Lust", and "VooDoo U" is ok. After that, they lost me with the malehomo/sex thing. I don't know if your into that kinda stuff, but when I heard Gobsausage's music on their site it kinda reminded me of LOA. Check out their website : Lordsofacid.com

DylerPlummer - 2-11-2004 at 10:16 AM

I don't know what you mean by "into that kinda stuff" but i don't think i am even though i don't know what it is.. Ha ha does that make sense.. Like i said they really are shit but it's a funny night out and they're great to take photos of.. I want one of those masks..
They're playing the Torture Garden on saturday but i'll be giving that one a miss unless i can borrow a pink wet suit ..

MichelleRene - 2-11-2004 at 10:25 AM

No, I didn't mean the homo/sexual stuff! I meant the sexual/techno/rave sound...hehehehe.

LOA changes their female singers quite a bit, and some of them are gorgeous. I went to see a band called The Genitorturers years ago and it was almost like seeing a live sex show! Pretty crazy! They are more hardcore metal, but the singer is soooo
hot!

MichelleRene - 2-11-2004 at 10:32 AM

These are both pictures of Jen from the Genitorturers.com.......She's so freakin' hot!

:wow::wow::wow:

Oh.. ha ha.. No it's not my sort of music.. Quite a few years ago we were at a club and the Genitorturers were playing across the road.. We were watching all the people going in and my mate said he really wanted to go.. We all laughed and then the next thing he took of his trousers and tee shirt.. turned his leather jacket inside out and over he went.. He looked like a right idiot in his pants (underwear to you americans),Doc Martin boots, bare flabby white chest and inside out leather jacket walking across the road.. We pissed ourselves but he got in.. Ha ha.
I rang him the next day but he was too shocked to talk.. Ha ha.

MichelleRene - 2-11-2004 at 10:45 AM

That's so funny. I saw them back in 93'. They had a human rack where they spun this guy around on it while she whipped him, Jen was piercing her (kitty) area while onstage, someone was getting a blow job and she stuck a pole of some sort up her suzy!

I was like Whoa! It was worth the $15 for the freak show....hey, I'll watch (from the back)....hehehe:saint:

Athena - 2-11-2004 at 10:51 AM

Hey, Neighbourhood-- that's in mine. My neighbourhood I mean.. Wow guys, this thread has become so tangential, but also VERY interesting all of a sudden.

Since we are on a rant, I noticed that someone posted a link to Sleepytime Gorilla Museum in the Links section. Does that mean than someone here has heard of Idiot Flesh? Not really that close to Lords of Acid, but definately into the whole freakishly dressing up to entertain thing. Like Circus goth anti-rock. Crazygoodstuff.

Yeah, a couple months ago The Servant was listed to play in NY along with Robots in Disguise and a few other artists on Recall, but they have since been removed from the roster. I'm really dissapointed that they may not play the gig now, but as long as I get to finally see Robots in Disguise, I'll be happy. But who knows, perhaps The Servant will sign on for the gig at a later date? Hell, the show doesn't even have a date yet, so it doesn't seem like anything is written in stone. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Well, uh, have fun at that Blink 182 concert :P

MichelleRene - 2-12-2004 at 07:35 AM

I saw on another site that they were listed as "The worst live band". That's pretty bad. Some of their old videos are funny. I don't like the new one "Miss You" they're showing on FUSE right now. The song is horrible.....they should stick to their pop/punk stuff.

That's great that your daughter enjoyed it. Have fun at the GOBSAUSAGE show! Try and get some photos.....I'm sure they'll be hilarious!
