Spunout Central Review

up sure if this has been posted yet, but here goes...

IMA Robot hooked me because of their droll/kitsch moniker. Once read, it stuck…BAM! Foolishly, I chose to purchase it without hearing a single note. My hypothesis was that Imarobot’s sound would follow suit with the simmering neo-new wave movement. IMA Robot’s did not carry me too far from its actuality; think (London) Suede’s Brett Anderson/P.I.L.’s John Lydon (formerly the Sex Pistol’s Johnny Rotten) vocally and filled with the lower-fi corporate wave of P.I.L. and Eno/Bowie late-70’s atmospheric sonics; IMA Robot is spiffy derivative pop with plucky catacombed filler.

Recently, I ripped apart The Strokes’ Room On Fire for following a like lead to a tired path. Bonus comparisons favor IMA Robot’s effort – their songs are catchier, broadcast a tolerable vocalist, use droll/quirky effects (hollow drum) and a better devoloped sound lift. Alex Ebert’s perverse lyrics are random and low brow laughter inducing, but sometimes stumble with clich?s. Beck's largely unaccredited bandmates Justin Meldal-Johnsen (bassist) and drummer Joey Waronker (drummer) hopped on in an unfamiliar co-feature role with guitarist Timmy Anderson as the Ima Robot’s programming and production trio.

Lovable pop sweeps with the Bowiefied “Dirty Life”, romping “Dynomite” and the 'British' stadium joint, “Striker”. Every cut, except the unbelievably dull ‘official’ closer (“What Are We Made From”) mind those digging for immediate time-capsuled gratification with plenty of winks and cutesy 'Intelevision flashback causing' instrumentation.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out what song on the CD sounds close to "Striker", but I couldn't come up with one either. Maybe he was smokin' crack when he/she wrote it.
