I'm going to the Strokes concert in SF in about 10 days....

avw86 - 3-28-2004 at 10:00 PM

...and I have no idea what to do. My friend never got a ticket in time before it sold out, and there's no way she could afford one for the outrageous prices scalpers are selling them for. So basically, I'm going by myself. There's just a few problems...First of all, San Francisco is about 45 minutes to an hour away from me, so my mom won't let me use her car. Secondly, the nearest BART station is over half an hour away, and only runs till midnight (I'm not even sure if the concert will be done by then). Thirdly, I am a 17 year old girl, so it's not exactly the safest thing for me to be in San Francisco by myself at night (especially a weeknight).

WHAT SHOULD I DO???? :no::(

There's no way I can miss this concert. I actually got my dad to get my ticket, and he's not one to stick to his word. Plus, I really love this band. I have a floor ticket and everything!

Does anyone know whereabouts on Market St. the Warfield is? Is it near a BART station? Is it in a good/bad neighborhood?

I'm trying to get my mom to get a hotel room for the night, because then we could also take a tour of USF the next day (the college I am most likely going to). But she doesn't have a job at the moment, so there's hardly any money. I don't know of any fairly cheap but decent hotels either near USF or the Warfield.

What's a girl to do? :(:no::(:no:

draconian - 3-29-2004 at 04:53 AM

Can you get a room with a student that night if you tour the campus the next day? A lot of schools will set you up with a place to stay for that purpose. Then it's just a matter of getting to the show that night.

MichelleRene - 3-29-2004 at 06:55 AM

yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Or even go onto Travelocity.com for good hotel rates for you and your Mom. I've been in the same situation.....it stinks. I've had to go solo before...and I know what you mean about being alone in a weird neighborhood. Is there anyone you could hook-up with at/before the show? I'd love to see that show as well. I'd go with you but I live in Maryland...hey, what about Poobs?

Totally..We almost never pay more than $40 a night and we've stayed in some cool hotels..

I don't really live that close..It's about, what? An hour away? Without traffic..I just don't see what use I could be..:(

chiefkaterina - 3-29-2004 at 12:26 PM

dont worry about being kidnapped or anything. you'll be safe. i go to SF all the time by myself and im still ok! just bring some pepper spray like i do.

Imaveedub - 3-29-2004 at 12:34 PM

and remember amanda.....steer clear from the queers....:o

poobs - 3-29-2004 at 01:11 PM

I think it's convincing your parents, more than anything..San Fran is really a friendly place..

avw86 - 3-29-2004 at 03:03 PM

Yeah, basically my number one problem right now is convincing my mom to even let me go alone, and how I'm gonna get there and back! She keeps saying things like, "people will know you're alone at the concert. What if something happens to you during the concert? There would be no one there to help you." But there are people I talk to online and have met at previous concerts who are going, and I always meet people at concerts (like Poobs :) ) She didn't buy it though...

I'll try to check with USF to see if I can work something out. And I'll keep checking hotels.com, travelocity.com, priceline.com, etc. My mom had a job interview today. She said if she gets a job by then, then we can get a hotel room.

I just hope that everything works out :(

Imaveedub - 3-30-2004 at 01:03 AM

good luck with everything amanda......

poobs - 3-30-2004 at 08:07 AM

Honestly, Amanda, if my car was in better shape right now, I'd take you..You shouldn't have to stress so much over a show!! Damn cars..:ticking:

avw86 - 3-30-2004 at 02:36 PM

Aw, thank you :)

Well, some good news: if my friends parents will let them, then we will all go together. They'll hang out around the city while I'm at the concert, and then they'll get me afterwards. But if that doesn't work out, there's a lady who lives around here that saw my post on another forum and offered to take me! :D

poobs - 4-6-2004 at 04:55 PM

Sooo??? What are the plans? Did you go? Has it not happened yet?? Fill us in, Amanda!!!:D

avw86 - 4-6-2004 at 05:06 PM

I found a ride!!! :D :D :D

It's THIS Thursday.

There's this Strokes message board, and I just mentioned that I might not go because I didn't have a solid ride. Well, there was this lady who works about 10 minutes away from me, and she said I could go with her there and back. I was sort of reluctant at first, because this lady could be anyone. You never know who you're talking to on the internet. Anyway, I told my mom about her and my mom thought I was being completely ridiculous. I had my mom call her anyway, and they talked for a while. We actually visited her at her work today (and she's one smart cookie! She's like the lead biochemist for this one company here in Silicon Valley). She was so sweet! And definitely not an internet weirdo. Her son is 3 years old, and is so cute! :) She's in her early 30s or something like that.

So my mom is completely reassured with everything now. Nancy (the lady) and I even came up with a plan to meet them. I'm going to wear a t-shirt that says, "Kiss me, it's my birthday!" and she's going to pretend to be my aunt, and that the concert was my birthday gift. Hahaha, I'm such a crazy fan :P

Everything works out in the end, I guess :)

And I will make sure to report on the show after it happens. Wish me luck in meeting them, guys and gals! Third time's a charm, right? :saint:

poobs - 4-7-2004 at 10:21 AM

Whooo!! I'm so stoked you found a ride!! Have fun!! Good luck on the kiss, psycho..:saint: :lol::lol:

avw86 - 4-7-2004 at 01:03 PM

Haha, thank you! :D

IT'S TOMORROW!!!!!!! :yes::duh::D

Wooo....I am a psycho, aren't I? :P

poobs - 4-7-2004 at 01:17 PM

Yes..You are..But a cool psycho!! You must give a full report upon your return!!

avw86 - 4-7-2004 at 06:19 PM

Ah, well...as long as I'm a cool one  ;) :P

I will most definitely (whoa, "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" moment) give a full report! :D

Imaveedub - 4-7-2004 at 06:40 PM

good luck on meeting the strokes amanda, and by the way....where can i get one of those "kiss me its my birthday" shirts? my birthday is coming up........

:D

avw86 - 4-9-2004 at 12:09 PM

SO FUCKING AWESOME!!!

I went last night, and am still on a high. Oh man, oh man! I'll just give a fairly brief account of my night here. If you want to know *everything* (and I mean everything!) go to www.xanga.com/kookie_manduh for my long-ass story :P

Alright, so the Raveonettes opened. I liked 'em a lot. I only knew one song, but I like all of their songs. And I managed to get a setlist afterwards :)

The Strokes did 16 songs I think. They were SO GOOD! This was my third time seeing them, and it was definitely the best. They did a cover of the Clash's "Clampdown" instead of playing 12:51. and they actually did "Trying your Luck"! It was kind of a cool coincidence because I yelled out "trying your luck!" and that was the song they played after :) Oh yeah, I was right against the barrier, a little to the left of Julian (singer). He came down into the audience a few times. It was pretty crazy down in the pit. I'm just so glad I was against the railing, otherwise I probably wouldn't have made it through the show. I think every inch of my body was touched...I'm so sore right now. I have a few "battle wounds" and I pulled a muscle in my leg, but it was WELL worth it! I snuck my camera in, and hopefully got some really good pictures. The security guards were cool, they didn't care that we had cameras even though they weren't allowed. And since we talked to them alot before the bands came on, they kept giving us free bottles of water :)

Alright, so after they were finished, my friend Nancy got their setlist! We decided to stick around to try and meet the band. Oh yeah, I said that it was my 18th birthday that day ("liar liar pants on fire...";) and had a t-shirt that said, "KISS ME...it's my 18th birthday!" on the front, and "barely legal" all around the bottom. I dunno how long we were waiting out there, but it wasn't too long. We met other people from one of their message boards, and everyone was extremely nice. After awhile, Julian came out! I think there were about 30 people out there and he made sure to talk to every single person/take pictures/sign autographs. Nancy said to Julian that she was my aunt, this was my birthday, and if I could get a birthday kiss. So he leaned down and *kissed* me on the lips/cheek! He's so gorgeous ;) I swear, I was gonna die right then. Everyone was gathered around when he kissed me, and they all said "awww" :)

Next, Nikolai (bass), came out. He's really sweet, but very shy. I got his autograph and took a picture with him. He's not very photogenic, so he looked a lot better in person.

After that, Albert (guitar) and Fab (drums) came out! I went up to Albert first, gave him a hug, and wished him a Happy Birthday. He was also very nice. Took a picture with him and got his autograph. I went up to Fab after and told him it was my birthday, so he gave me one of those European-style cheek to cheek kisses :) He's shorter than I thought. He was a sweet heart as well. Took my picture with him and got his autograph :)

The only one that didn't come out was Nick, the other guitar player. Oh well, there's always a next time.

I didn't get home till after 3 am, and didn't fall asleep till around 6 am. I just woke up not too long ago, and it's after 1 pm right now. I can't wait to see the pictures! I really hope they all came out.

It was kind of funny because I told all my friends, "mark my words--I'm going to meet them!" I guess that saying 'third time's a charm' really is true ;)

I love this band so much :D

poobs - 4-9-2004 at 12:21 PM

WHHHOOOOO!!! I'm so happy for you Amanda!! I wanna see the pics!!!

avw86 - 4-9-2004 at 12:40 PM

Thank you!! :D

And I will definitely post pics when I get them! :)

I'm just so glad everything worked out so perfectly! :)

TurtleEnterprises - 4-9-2004 at 01:20 PM

thats so cool Awv86, i know how you were stressing out bout this show, im glad you didnt miss it, and had a wonderful time:yes:

draconian - 4-9-2004 at 01:56 PM

Sounds like a kickass show! I'm going to see them in a couple of weeks at First Ave.

avw86 - 4-9-2004 at 01:59 PM

Thanks, everybody! :)

And Drac, I hope you have a kick ass time! :D Have you seen them live before?

draconian - 4-9-2004 at 02:37 PM

Nope--looking forward to it, though.

avw86 - 4-9-2004 at 05:01 PM

Yes, they're something to look forward to :)

A lot of people say they're boring live, but they're not! Julian really gets into it and interacts with the crowd a lot. I think it's great when a band is better live than on their album. There are a lot of bands out there who suck live.

Tell me all about the show :)

poobs - 4-9-2004 at 05:08 PM

I saw them in Vegas and at Coachella..I liked them..I couldn't understand a word Julian was saying, but I still liked them..

happysmilely - 4-9-2004 at 05:31 PM

I love the Strokes.
I remember when they were a small unknow band
I never have gone to go see them, almost, but better shows always came up.
I'll see them some day.

My brothers girl friend went to go see them this tour. She wore a shirt that said "stroke me"
she has a bit crush on Julian (like a bunch of you stroke fans)

Dammit...I really want to scan my pictures! I have an HP all-in-one printer/copier/scanner, but the scanning function doesn't work. It says I need to install the driver, but I can't find the right download on their website :(

Damn the man!

poobs - 4-11-2004 at 12:27 AM

It's THE MAN trying to bring you down, Amanda!! You must fight him!! FIGHT THE POWER!!! :o:o Good luck with it.. :D

lurker - 4-11-2004 at 12:35 AM

Oh mAN???!!?!
i was struggling on that phrase "the man"

poobs - 4-11-2004 at 12:39 AM

avw86 - 4-12-2004 at 02:05 AM

...And now onto the pictures! :D http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4287190363&code=91...

Lemme know what you think :)

Man, I got home from the Vines/Jet show about an hour ago. More on that later (good story to tell! hang tight). I have to be at school in like four hours...ugh....but it was worth it!

poobs - 4-12-2004 at 08:09 AM

Was there only one with you and Julian? I thought you would have more pics with more of the guys and just you..Or did I miss them?

poobs - 4-12-2004 at 08:12 AM

Wait..I'm finding more..Sorry..:duh:

Some of these are really really awesome..Like I would see them in a magazine!!! Nice job Amanda!! :D

happysmilely - 4-12-2004 at 09:06 AM

cool, nice pic's
yeah I just saw the Vines and Jet....
I got pic's and so on
set list 2.
However I am sick and don't feel like writing a review right now :)
plus I have no $ to devolpe the photo's yet
glad you had fun

avw86 - 4-12-2004 at 09:32 PM

Thanks for the compliments! :D

I'm still all giddy from that show! Haha.

Ok, for the Vines/Jet show...I didn't like the Living End, and I wasn't impressed by Jet. They were kind of boring, and all their songs started to sound the same after a while. Now the Vines...I used to not like them. But after seeing them live, I think they're really cool! I like their harder/faster songs better than the slower ones. Craig Nichols was crazy :)

And after the show, we waited by the tour busses for a while. We ended up meeting everyone in the Vines except the drummer, and the lead singer of Jet! Craig was the best...he was SO damn stoned! He even had a bong in his jacket! When he came walking towards us, he just had this huge/goofy smile on his face. I outstretched my arms, and then he did too, so we gave each other a big hug! :) Then we took some pix (he made the funniest faces by the way...hopefully I can post em tomorrow or Wed.). I don't think he said much but, "Thanks." He was basically just laughing like a loon the whole time and being a pothead ;) Hi-larious! :D
