HAPPY HOLIDAYS, FOLKS!

poobs - 12-24-2002 at 01:17 PM

Just poobs here wishing y'all a very Happy X-Mas and a very Merry New Year!!:D:D

draconian - 12-24-2002 at 01:45 PM

Thanks, poobs! It's 20 degrees here and we are all on sugar highs from the holiday cookies, but other than that everything's copacetic.

p.s. the movie "Drumline," executive produced by Dallas Austin (who is producing an Ima Robot track) was terrific. I couldn't believe someone would make a movie about a drumline, to begin with. It was pretty cliche' but the fact that the same old story was in a milieu I was familiar with was enough to get me going.

At the end, the mean band brought in Petey Pablo to rap over their field show performance, that was pretty funny.

Phobiac - 12-24-2002 at 02:45 PM

Poops! Happy holidays to you!

In the spirit of the season the front page has snowflakes.

seacaptain - 12-27-2002 at 01:31 PM

I'm a couple o' days late, but just wanted to say hi and happy holidays too! I'm at home in sunny California for a bit, I go back to Boston next week. I missed a giant snowstorm out there, it seems. :( Everyone whines and complains about snow, but I love it and wish I hadn't missed it. This 65-degree Inland Empire air does nothing for me anymore. :)

Went down to UCLA to visit the old haunts yesterday, and was amazed how it's been over-run by chains! Penny Lane is gone! I bought so many cds there when I was a student, you wouldn't believe it. BestBuy has moved in and, I assume, that's why it went out of bizness. :( Now there's grocery stores and OfficeMax's and all the stuff we thought we wanted there, but now seeing them... wish they weren't. Ah well. *sigh*

Otherwise, basically, I've just been watching Lord of the Rings movies. :) Last Thursday, watched the super-long DVD version of FOTR. Friday, we watched the Two Towers. Flew home Saturday, and watched the first one again on Starz. Almost went to watch the second one again in Westwood, but LA traffic made us get there too late! :( All this and there's about 5 other movies, I'm dying to see too... (mainly Charlie Kaufman films).

Anyway, that's my holidays, pretty lazy, which is good. I hope you're all doing well, and don't have to work too hard or study or anything!

Vin

poobs - 12-27-2002 at 04:43 PM

Phob, I love the snowflakes..So damn cute..

Seacap'n, isn't it odd how much things change when you go away? I am amazed at how big a shithole Whittier has become whenever I go back..Don't get me wrong, it was never that great, but it's turned into a giant stripmall now..I think there's a Penny Lane in Uptown Whittier, now that I think of it..You can go and visit my old haunts..;) Hope your vacation is grand!!Sorry about missing the snow..I think we might have about 3 drops of rain soon..:D

Storm Watch 2003!

seacaptain - 12-28-2002 at 11:06 AM

 Yea I know, the weirdest was the night my plane landed, we drove down to Redondo Beach, and there was a crazy lightning/rain storm going on. I always forget when I come home how cool the mountains are too.

draconian - 12-28-2002 at 03:08 PM

When do you fly back, Vin? And Poobs, what are your New Years plans? We're going to Jane's Addiction at the Wiltern, I believe...you know you're getting old when you're happy to get seats instead of pit for a concert. I just arrived in CA yesterday, we spent the day in Pasadena and are whipping up a curry tonight. Hey since everyone's just hanging out over here--did any of you hear any of that album, the Smashups, I think it was? The one that has songs of disparate artists overlaid with each other? I read Spin and Rolling Stone on the flight up, and this album was listed on the best of lists in both. Sounds intriguing.

Also, there was a New Order cover album out, anybody hear that yet?

Vin, want to get together for pasta April 20th in Boston? Phobiac and I will be in town for the marathon.

seacaptain - 12-28-2002 at 03:35 PM

I fly back on the 1st... my brother needs to be back for a class on the 2nd.

April 20th sounds great, I'll bring some old Turtles!

I read about that album in RS too. I didn't know there was an album, but I've dl'ed a few tracks like those from the web. (I believe I'm talking about the same "mixes" that are on this album.) They're usually pretty entertaining. There's a few Beck ones, like AC/DCs "Highway To Hell" mixed with "Mixed Bizness." My favorite is Eminem's "Without Me" with Led Zeppelin's "Wonton Song" (Eminem = wonton, get it?). I'll look for some more when I get back...

Neuwave - 12-28-2002 at 03:39 PM

Damn you Vin I was lookin for you I was trying to figure out the best place to post(beck, lazy, bot) whether you came out Redlands to see your parents. Cool.

Neuwave - 12-28-2002 at 03:41 PM

Dude, I've been so into Eminem lately too. Do you have the Infinite CD from 96? It's fucking tiz-night!!!

seacaptain - 12-30-2002 at 10:36 AM

I haven't listened to too much Eminem, really. I'm going on a cd spree with X-mas money when I get back, any recommendations?

Spent the day yesterday riding a bike at the beach... must say, that is one thing I miss doing now I don't live in California. :)

draconian - 12-30-2002 at 10:49 AM

I read this morning that Eminem's last three CDs have sold 7 million copies...each. That's just insane. And I read he had dated Mariah Carey, which is a fun fact in itself.

The Streets' album sounds pretty good, we're heading down La Brea shopping today so maybe I can convince Phobiac for a stop at Aron's records, (if it's still there).

poobs - 12-30-2002 at 01:14 PM

What am I doing for New Year's? That's a damn fine question..:duh: I think I'm taking it easy this year..Hang at home with the kid, drink a couple bottles of champagne, and wallow in self-misery..:( Ha! No, really though..Probably hang with the kid, see if some people want to cruise over, but mainly chill..:D How did you score those Jane's Addiction tix? That's insane! That'll be such a good show!!:D

draconian - 12-30-2002 at 02:45 PM

We just got lucky, that is, Phobiac did. I tried to get through online during the ticket sale and was unable to. Can we come over if you decide to pop open some champagne? We'll stop by on our way to the Wiltern with some cheesy potatoes.

poobs - 12-30-2002 at 04:16 PM

Ohhh..Cheesy potatoes...Of course!! Give me a call..I think I'm taking my sister out to eat and possibly picking up a friend, but I think I can squeeze you guys in for the champagne!!:D Let me know what time you're thinking of leaving..I should be around..:D

draconian - 12-30-2002 at 04:32 PM

Maybe around 8:30, we'll have a toast with the 'Nut and be on our way!

poobs - 12-31-2002 at 01:01 PM

Sweet..:D

stewoo - 1-1-2003 at 12:22 PM

stewoo - 1-1-2003 at 12:24 PM

^^^ was that the first post of 2003??? Woo-hoo (if so)!

seacaptain - 1-2-2003 at 11:58 AM

Good luck with the exams Stewoo!

How was the Jane's Addiction concert? Details, please.

I'm back in Boston! It's 40 degrees colder.

Also good news -- a law school accepted me!!! Unbelievable. :) It's an ok school, I think. I still have about 10 more to hear from before I make a decision, but I guess I now know for sure I'll be going somewhere next year. What a great thing to find in my mail after flying all day yesterday with no food and my luggage didn't make it and I was super-tired from New Year's Eve...

draconian - 1-2-2003 at 02:14 PM

Congratulations on that first acceptance! It's nice to have a backup. I remember that my med school backup was MCO in Toledo--boy am I happy I didn't have to resort to it but it was still reassuring to know I would be in school the following year. Let's hope this bodes well for the rest of your apps.

Jane's was a lot of fun. The audience was filled with die-hard fans who appreciated the Nothing's Shocking-heavy setlist. Perry Farrell had three costume changes and the performance was extremely theatrical. I thought the highlight was the tribute to Joe Strummer: they covered "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" and Stephen Perkins totally nailed the drum part, excellent excellent performance and I can't believe we forgot to bring the taping equipment. The audience was nuts for it and brought them out for a couple of encores. It sounds like they'll have a new album out before summer and will go out on tour then.

The other highlight for me was hearing "Ocean Size." We were up in the balcony and thought we were going to die when they played that one. The floor was just rolling up and down from all the movement of the crowd.

At midnight, everyone brought out their girlfriends/wives (Navarro was with Carmen Elektra, of course) and did the countdown to 2003, then went back onstage for another hour or so.

Phobiac has these sneaky binoculars that are equipped with a camera hidden inside, we'll put some photos up soon.

seacaptain - 1-2-2003 at 04:44 PM

"Three Days" is one of my favorite songs...I like Ritual De Lo Habitual better than Nothing's Shocking... though both are very cool...

This school that accepted me is Franklin Pierce, up in New Hampshire. Looking at the rankings, it's overall ranking is not really good at all, it's a third tier school. But then it's Intellectual Property program... third overall in the country! Not sure why the huge discrepency. I guess I should buy the USNews guide soon.
