Local bands?

bananaboat - 3-6-2005 at 10:38 AM

I've been to a couple local shows in Calgary and most of them weren't so great but then on Friday, me and my friend went to see "Sudden Infant Dance Syndrome" because we thought their stuff was so hilarious on myspace. Man oh man!! The show was so awesome and a lot of the other bands were pretty awesome too. I danced so much and it was cool to see the different styles the kids were sporting. It made me as happy the day Ima came to Warped and that's saying a lot.

Have you guys gone to any shows from local bands? What's it like?

Shmeh, there are a couple good ones here. I always find local shows a bit awkward, though.

most local bands arn't that great.
But I'm freinds with a lot of them.
I just saw my freinds Operatic play last night.
Louis XIV ! now that is good stuff...

I tend to react to local bands a lot diffrently.
The main diffrence is the personal relationships affect what I think of the bands...

Awkward in what way?
For me, I find it awkward when there's only TEN other people who show up and the venue they're renting out is meant for 100 people. I kind of feel bad for the bands playing and promoters.
But yeah, I don't know any local bands personally but I agree with how it's different.

Most of the local shows that I've went to have bands that that are pretty good but it's usually their genre of music I don't enjoy, l something ike "emo" bores me.

Just the fact that I know most of the people at the shows tends to make it awkward. And then also the smaller amount of people.

And the venues. Like how bands end up playing at like the Teen Center and Dr. Miller's. It's kinda random... and awkward.

Calgary's rock scene can't be beat. The Maple Leaf Hosers are excellent. The Labatt Street Hockey Pucks also have a pretty fucking tight sound. And if you're ever up in Regina, check out the Butt Fucking Egyptians. Amazing. And let's not forget "The Quebec Quoi?", they drop le gros science.

I went to some random bar one night when I was up here visiting my sister and a band was playing that I totally dug..Turns out their name was The Brodys!!! :D So I chatted it up with them after the show and hung out when they came down to Redondo..Now that I've moved back up here, I haven't ever bothered to see them..:( Maybe that has something to do with the fact that I have no life and NEVER go out..:duh:

I understand the akward thing.
in all the way listed and more.
but even if it is a bit diffrent, I still like it.

I see great local shows all the time up here in Maine, though granted all of them have been punk or Ska oriented with the occasional alternative or rockabilly band , just for the simple fact that the only bands that play locally are generally either punk, ska, metal, or emo(the 2 latter aren't my cup o' tea). But anyways, the shows ,most of the time, are in a dance hall or church with little to no stage , have a disco ball or something of the like, and are 9 pounds of fun in an 8 pound sack.

All the local bands here are too heavy / punk for me. :(

Dude I go to local shows here all the time, three of the best Oak Town Bands are probably The Jezebel Diary, Prozack Staple (they split up recently though after many years of playing), and Final Bow.
