Religion, god and the higher powers-What do you believe in?

Seb - 3-22-2005 at 07:47 PM

I was talking about religion with a friend of mine and thought it would be interesting to hear what some of your thoughts and/or beliefs are on this subject.

JunoRedneck - 3-22-2005 at 07:50 PM

minimandy14 - 3-22-2005 at 08:23 PM

I believe that jesus was a crazy man who thought he was the son of god. and that well there is no god. but if there is i beleive that the religion i would choose would probably be judaism but as of right now I am Buddhist becuase its really not a religion though, its just the persuit of knowledge and enlightenment.

minimandy14 - 3-22-2005 at 08:23 PM

IsaacBot - 3-23-2005 at 04:49 AM

jesus was a crazy man? is it crazy to be PEACEFUL? is it crazy to be CARING and LOVING? is it crazy to HELP others? i may not be a christian or even religious but jesus had some good things going, despite being crazy. wasn't it jesus that said "don't act a fool" and "better ourselves"? or was that me? ImaGod.

corkey16 - 3-23-2005 at 07:18 AM

corkey16 - 3-23-2005 at 08:49 AM

bananaboat - 3-23-2005 at 02:59 PM

Jesus IS like totally the son of God. Like duh!!! *duh-face*

poobs - 3-23-2005 at 05:12 PM

I'm not religious, but I just can't say that I don't believe in God..Or maybe not even God, but I can't say that there isn't some higher power..Plus, it was comforting to think of my Dad in Heaven when I was grieving..:duh:

RiffRaff - 3-23-2005 at 06:45 PM

I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.

That is totally the way I think of it, but I just didn't want to write a whole big shpeel and what not. I mean I know that he did "great things" and whatnot but I mean honestly if someone went around now adays saying he was the son of "god" he would be put strait into a loony bin.

Jette - 3-24-2005 at 01:44 AM

i was directing it at isaac, who was insinuating crazy is bad

Noisemonster - 3-24-2005 at 02:07 AM

i believe in science. i don't believe in god or something.

EN - 3-24-2005 at 04:16 AM

Yeah, Atheist all the way.I just feel that there have been many, many different religons throughout time, and Christianity, Islam, and whatever else are just the current ones.

corkey16 - 3-24-2005 at 07:34 AM

i'm sorry. it's just hard for me to see so many people that don't believe in God. It's just too weird for me to think.

I don't know, yeah if someone did that today we would throw him in the psych ward, but the difference from today and back then is that the Isrealites were fortold that the Messiah would come, so they were expecting him. And yeah...I totally lost my train of thought.

I think it's great. I whole heartedly endorse rational, reasonable, critical thinking.

Seb - 3-24-2005 at 11:11 AM

Whether or not there is a god or higher power, I do not know but I do not believe in god or religion. I was raised catholic(went to sunday school for 7 years, but on wednesdays) but my parents didn't force it on me and wanted me to make my own decisions. I(we) arent religious people, we decided to go skiing/snowboarding instead of church on sundays.

Jette - 3-24-2005 at 11:52 AM

you can just go skiing every sunday? in holland you need to take special holidays for that

There are three mountains in Vancouver, Cypress, Seymour and Grouse. All are less than 25mins driving from my doorstep or I can take the train and then a shuttle bus and be there in less than an hour.

Where are you people who think this way want to live when you die is the question. Yes i unserstand some people it is common to think that way, but where or how do you think you got here?

Not that there's anything wrong with that line of thinking..We're all respectful of each other's opinions and beliefs here, right? :saint:

EvilMotivator - 3-24-2005 at 10:48 PM

I just feel sorry for some people, is all.

minimandy14 - 3-25-2005 at 03:05 PM

heh yea me too. I go to youth group with one of my friends sometimes and it just gets me every time I go how many people can worship something that I beleive isn't there. I mean and what if there is no god or whatever you know? then all of those religious people just wasted there life worshiping nothing.

IsaacBot - 3-25-2005 at 04:15 PM

so like, i totally hung out with god last night. it said that all of you are silly for wasting your time thinking about it not to mention arguing about it. and then me and god cuddled and i copped a feel! Whoo hoo!!

i like sushi.

corkey16 - 3-25-2005 at 04:59 PM

"Where do you want to live when you die?" sounds like a Nirvana lyric.

happysmilely - 3-26-2005 at 09:15 PM

I didn't take the time to read what the rest of you wrote yet.
I had parents who made me search into all diffrent religions to find my own. I found I didn't like any of them.
for me I don't really know if we have a "god" but I don't think so. I don't belive in religion. I think it has brought us good things, and bad as well. I think heaven and hell is bull.
But whatever you think is fine with me.
I belive in beliving if you wish but I'm not a person who wishes to belive. :saint:

Of course not, that would mean me loosing I.Q. Points :D

jk

Oh dear. I don't want to be around if you lose IQ points.

FlowerDancerL - 3-29-2005 at 06:48 PM

I'm a Christian. I beleive in God and I like going to church. My parents are weird. My Dad is a Moslem and my Mom is a Pagan. Her friends are Sikh, Buddhist and Wiccan. Then my dad converted to Judaism to marry a Jewish woman. Then my Grandmother went from being Catholic to Protestent to some weird new age thing. They're all nuts. But Mom says basic human values are the same throughout almost all religious philosophies. What's logical about religion anyway? Nothing. It's all about faith which is inherently illogical because there is no proof.

minimandy14 - 3-29-2005 at 09:15 PM

well if you know that its illogical then why do you believe it?

happysmilely - 3-30-2005 at 03:53 PM

because humans are naturaly made to be "spirital", evne those who are anti-Religion, god, so on.
she was brought up with it, it's in her social upbringing.
You can belive in illogical things
...

RiffRaff - 3-30-2005 at 04:00 PM

Humans are "naturally made" to eat, drink, shit and fuck. That's about it. Spirituality is a red herring.

happysmilely - 3-30-2005 at 05:25 PM

No see. It’s not religion. It’s "spiritual" in some way.
I’m using poor words.
Mysticism and morality are better words a better word. (Even in the absence of it's still there)
I didn't mean it in a religious context, you can be an atheist and have it.

EvilMotivator - 3-30-2005 at 06:45 PM

I'm with RiffRaff on this one.

JunoRedneck - 3-30-2005 at 06:58 PM

I think religion appeals to people because it gives them a sense of security. It makes them feel better about the afterlife, and makes them feel that they have some control over their lives that if they believe this or pray this many times that good things will happen to them. It scares people to think that they have absolutely no control in this world and everything is random.

EvilMotivator - 3-30-2005 at 07:05 PM

Trudat.

minimandy14 - 3-30-2005 at 08:23 PM

Dude, All I know its that the only reason why religion was invented was becuase man kind needed a reason why we were here, and where we came from and whatnot. In my eyes religion is a stupid excuse for life.

Jette - 3-31-2005 at 05:00 AM

well i think 'stupid excuse' is a bit overrated. they just thought of the thing most logical at the moment, and over time we thought of even more logical things again and again, but who says were not completely wrong on the answers to questions of where we come from which we now assume as logic?

happysmilely - 3-31-2005 at 06:21 AM

I agree as well.

Maybe I just have a sociological view on it.
What I was saying is the same thing as above, and just that all humans tend to have the need for it in one way or the other.
Example, most of us here and music.

Even if it's not religion Humans naturally do it.
It is that tendency that breeds religion.
Animals don't do it....
Is my point more clear now?
It seems it's hard for me to explain.
I'm not justifying religion, just saying we have a tendency to "worship" "believe"...
And feel free to disagree, we all have differences.
I just wanted to be sure you all understood I’m not saying were naturally religious, but naturally have the tendencies that breed religion.

That or I just took one too many sociology classes.

wow :wow: I'm ranting again, at 6 am.

JunoRedneck - 3-31-2005 at 07:31 AM

I totally understand. Something about spirituality appeals to people. Every culture has one religion or another that they've created on their own, even before they've come in contact with other civilazations. And most religions tend to move towards monotheism as well. Those ideas just appeal to people. I think that monotheism goes back to our animal instincts in that we always looked up to a dominant male to be our leader. So we tend to like the idea of an omnipotent male leader  But that's just my weird theory...

EvilMotivator - 3-31-2005 at 01:36 PM

I think you two need to go back to sleep. You're awake altogether too early.

JunoRedneck - 3-31-2005 at 02:18 PM

Some people actually get up and do things, like go to work or school. Not everyone can sleep in until noon everyday...
