The Guide: Music: Cut copy: On tour

John Robinson

The 1980s electro-funk revival is now so far down the road that we can loosely divide the bands up into three categories: good (Tom Vek, VHS Or Beta), the all to play for (the Departure) and the plainly having a laugh (Ima Robot). Australians Cut Copy (assuredly in the good camp) are the latest, and just one of the many to take inspiration in the magnificent hard Gallic disco of Daft Punk - arguably at the root of all this, though sadly no longer leaders of the pack - having moved things on by mellowing them down. Their track Future is a favourite of Franz Ferdinand; meanwhile, they seem to be moving, slyly, Royksopp-style, towards the mainstream. jr
