Rock Critic’s Choice: Nasty, Cool, Nice Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is already up to its fourth album in eight years (has it really been … ?), and Baby 81 finds the dark, moody boys baying away at a cold, cruel world in a fine, cold, cruel style. Maybe they’ll get lucky and get Scarlett Johansson to sing backing vocals for them, as she did a few days ago with BRMC’s spiritual godfathers the Jesus and Mary Chain at Coachella? (Tues., Wiltern Theater, with the Fratellis.) Memphis, the brainchild of Stars frontman Torquil Campbell, performs atmospheric alt-rock songs from the recent A Little Place in the Wilderness disc Thursday at the Troubadour. The “soul patrol” wheezes onward: Taylor Hicks plays the House of Blues this Friday. Raise your wine coolers and “rock out.” IMA Robot joins members of the Nortec Collective for a little light music at the Natural History Museum’s “First Fridays” program (900 Exposition Blvd., Exposition Park, L.A., at 8 p.m.; info: 213-763-3466 or Nhm.org). Former Throwing Muse and 50 Foot Waver Kristin Hersh brings her famous thousand-yard stare and quirky pop to the El Rey Theatre Wednesday. Support comes from the McCarricks. A nice week for aging punks with memories of the old days: Check out Agnostic Front at the Knitting Factory on Friday, and, in a non-musical event, Jim Lindberg (of the band Pennywise) promotes his new book about being a “punk rock dad” which is, unsurprisingly, the title of said tome, by talking about his experiences (Sun., Key Club, 5 p.m.). And don’t miss authentic Boston hardcore dudes Bury Your Dead throwing down at the Whisky on Wednesday. Nasty, heavy stuff. |
