BELLEVILLE — Rachel Flake, a senior at Althoff High School in Belleville, is in this week's Student Spotlight for her academic achievements, her willingness to help others and her volunteerism.

Rachel is a member of the National Honor Society, the golf team, science club, Scholar Bowl, Student Ambassadors, Rotary Club and St. Vincent de Paul Society. She's the editor of the Althoff Crusader, co-founder of Theme Thursdays, math team captain, Girl Scouts president, a statistician for the boys basketball team and class representative for the student council and Althoff Catholic Leadership Program.

Rachel, an Illinois State Scholar, has received many awards, including the Girl Scouts Silver Award, Optimist Award, Young Achievers Award, Rotary Youth Leadership Award and Youth Salute Leader. She volunteers with Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, the Girl Scouts, St. Vincent de Paul Society soup kitchen, American Red Cross and Feed-the-Poor.

Rachel enjoys playing the piano and trumpet, traveling, reading and writing.

She lives in Belleville with her parents, Eric and Susan Flake, and sister, Emily, 14.

Here's more information on Rachel:

After high school I plan to: Attend Missouri State University in Springfield, to study fashion merchandising and business.

The next item of clothing I would like to buy is: A purple pencil skirt.

The best book I ever read was: "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," by Stephen Chbosky, because it changed my outlook on life.

I listen to: Music all of the time. My favorite artists are Tegan and Sara, The Format, Bloc Party, Ima Robot, Boys Night Out and The Shins.

I'm most proud of: Being myself.

The last time I cleaned my room I found: All of my long-lost favorite clothes.

My favorite subject at school is: My business classes because I feel like I could actually use them after I graduate.

My favorite time with my family is: When we go on our annual family vacations.

Nobody ever says I'm: Shy.

At my 10th reunion, I expect: To show everyone how successful I am.

I know I'm growing up because: I've now realized how small the petty things that used to bother me are.

The person who influenced me the most is: My busia (grandmother). She has always told me that I can do anything.

If I could change one thing with how people think, I would change: The way people look at others.

If I could spend one hour with anyone, it would be: John McCain. He's so inspiring, and his outlook on life is incredible.

Others might describe me as: Outgoing and friendly.

If I could go anywhere in the world, it would be: The Amalfi Coast in Italy.

If I could do anything different at school, I would: Not. I have done everything I wanted to accomplish at school.
