Thanks to the joy of my photographic memory...I guess it would be an audiographic memory?...here is the set list from tonight's show at The Roxy.
But, before that, a quick run down...
So the symbols come crashing down in Here Come The Bombs and there appears to be some mayhem on stage. Joey hiding behind a speaker and then Joey
slumped over the drums...what's gives?
Enter Scott.
Joey's replacement. You read that correctly...frick'in crazy.
The guys put on a pretty good roost pretending that Scott was just some average Joe in the crowd that could play drums, but it was all a set-up.
Scott finished up, playing with the band, after Here Come The Bombs with an an intense energy packed Instrumental Jam that lasted about 1 minute.
After that, What Are We Made From (the first time I know of this track being played live) and an extra encore of Sex Symbols On Parade.
End show with Justin speaking into the mic saying "Thanks Joey. It's been real."
Scott, who I must say can play with some pretty nice vigor and intensity, will make a fine addition. Of course he's not Joey Waronker, but I
don't think that anyone will be let down as it's clearly evident that he (Scott) can bring the energy and intensity that compliments
JMJ's bass playing excellence so well.
What else can I say, totally bummed to hear that Joey has decided to pursue other challenges (I'm so selfish), but he did say that he would play
some guest spots. Let's hold him to it.
Scott will be the drummer during the Junior Senior tour. You won’t be disappointed, so don’t change any plans and welcome him with open arms. He
really does kick some ass on the drums. The next Matt Sorum? Neil Pert? Go check it out and let me know.
The show was excellent, from Alex chomping on a maxi pad to JMJ confiscating some poor girls black Jetta key; yes the keys were a-waving. So many
people were into the songs and there was definitely an energy increase brought to the place from all the new fans. So many people into all the songs
now. Very cool. The evolution of a rock star witnessed. Almost a 60 minute set.

aw that's a real bummer. i'm sure scott will be great, but i will definitely miss joey.
davedraconian - 10-30-2003 at 07:08 AM
.Com just put this up:
"Joey Waronker, drummer for Ima Robot, has left the group.
After much deliberation and soul-searching, Joey decided that his four cats at home were desperately needing more time with him to snuggle.
Taking Joey's position is Scott Devours, a handsome fella and fine drummer from Long Beach, CA. Scott has promised not to have the same issue
with his seven cats that Joey had."colforbin6 - 10-30-2003 at 07:59 AM
is this a joke?

Scott Devours
draconian - 10-30-2003 at 03:08 PM
Was it Scott Devours, formerly of the band Oleander? Pic Here
edit: and if it is him, Popmatters had some nice words about his skills as a drummer in this bit about Oleander's album, Joyride:
"Joyride is a blistering display of thick riffs and intensity with less bittersweet melody and more straight up rock. Sounding like a latter day
Stone Temple Pilots at times, it's not just the soaring vocals of Thomas Flowers that carry Oleander, or even the non-stop grinding of guitarist
Ric Ivanisevich; it's the rhythm section that has stepped it up into monster mode. On his second album with the band, drummer Scott Devours is
unbelievably solid -- settled in firmly with bassist Doug Eldridge when not threatening to steal the entire show."

Ahh damn, that sucks. JMJ and Joey definitely have a chemistry that will be missed. I'm glad I got to see a Joey-era concert now! colforbin6 - 10-30-2003 at 03:44 PM
I couldn't agree more Captain.IMAWreck - 10-30-2003 at 04:18 PM
Hey all- just wanted to say that I have seen Scott Devours play a few times with Oleander and this guy is great. He has to be if IMA Robot chose him
to play drums for their band, right? I am glad this transition is going smoothly, no drama- perhaps Joey didnt feel like touring and has alot of
exciting projects to participate in at home in LA...
Anyway, I'll vouch that Scott is a worthy addition to the band- I cant wait to see them live! later-JerseyJoJo - 10-30-2003 at 06:20 PM
I agree with the cap and 6. Very glad I got to see Joey play live with the band.
One has to wonder what the inside story is. He was invited (persuaded?) into the band, stayed through the recording of the album, began touring.
Just hmmmm - that's all.
Rockin' at the Roxy!!
Athena - 10-30-2003 at 06:35 PM
Wow what a dynamic show! The band all said they thought so too. Alex said he
though this was the best audience so far!! A lot of good sexual energy from Alex and we in the crowd all ate it up. Don't forget the bra that
ended up onstage too. I didn't quite get the whole pantyliner thing-- maybe the girl that threw it wanted it back after Alex sopped up all his
sweat in it or something, I dunno. We were all dripping with sweat after the show, and that's how I like it-- danced the whole time. Fun, fun,
fun. It cracked me up that Scott seemed like random clean cut guy in a short
sleeve button down and even went so far as to shake hands with the band before busting out on the next song. Good Times. :saint:RiffRaff - 10-30-2003 at 06:39 PM
Scott looks like a frat boy. He'll need to buy some eyeliner before the next show.Athena - 10-30-2003 at 07:11 PM
Yeah, or at least some hair goop or
somethin'...I was kinda hoping the frat boy look was part of the setup.car539 - 10-30-2003 at 07:17 PM
Oh my God. I am heartbroken and crushed that Joey is leaving. It must have been some foreboding omen that I wore my bot shirt today. This day just
can't get much worse. I am so lucky that I got to actually see him play with Ima Robot and meet him. Joey's my hero. He's been touring
for so long, so I don't blame him for wanting to be at home more with his wife and cats. I am sure that it takes its toll. I can't help but
think that the drama at the Roxy show was some sort of homage to the Who concert when Keith Moon passed out and an audience member had to take over. I
am sure it was a tough decision for Joey and I know the band and his fans will miss him a lot. JMJ and Joey were just so great together. I have to
check out .com and cry. Thanks for the music, Joey!car539 - 10-30-2003 at 07:18 PM
One more thing...Drac and Phobiac, did either of you know about this?lomax - 10-31-2003 at 09:13 AM
from the post on the front of the official. thhere seems to be some kind of piss take. its not good news though.seacaptain - 10-31-2003 at 12:04 PM
I wouldn't be surprised though if Joey remained the Bot's studio drummer, much in the way Beck uses him (and JMJ, now). Joey hasn't
actually toured with Beck since like 1997, but he still plays on most the records. But I guess we'll have to wait and see. It is a little
Spinal Tap-py though, isn't it?RiffRaff - 10-31-2003 at 01:23 PM
Let's just hope Joey doesn't spontaneously combust.draconian - 11-1-2003 at 06:24 AM
Spinal Tap-py in the sense that they have been through so many drummers already. Maybe that is what Joey meant when he said he'd be back for
some "special" appearances--studio work?
The one thing that the band will lose is his creativity as a writer and producer. Though if Scott is coming from a metalhead background, I can think
of no other influence more different from the rest of the band to push their music forward.lomax - 11-1-2003 at 08:44 AM

Sexy is a B-side on the French/German "Dynomite" single--check out the Releases and Recordings section for buying info. A really laid-back,
medium-tempo song in the vein of "Scream." They've played it live at least three times in the U.S.lomax - 11-1-2003 at 09:22 AM
i dont see buying info?draconian - 11-1-2003 at 10:06 AM

Wow!! I just hope it wasn't used. I guess he earned his wings........ Maybe next time someone can throw a pair of Granny-panties at Alex.
He'd probably put them on, now that would be interesting.:opoobs - 11-4-2003 at 02:02 PM
I waited a while to post here on this topic because I am seriously so distraut that I missed Joey's last show with the band..There's nothing
I can do about it, but it just makes me hate living here even more..Oi vey..I'll deal and I'm positive I'll dig the new drummer, so no
worries..Joey will be missed though.. I've started a crusade to find and kill
those sons of bitches who started those fires which prevented me from driving down..I'm taking the law into my own hands, folks, and it's
not going to be pretty..
Scott Devours on Drums
peachslurper - 12-15-2003 at 08:16 AM
I'm new to this site but wanted to provide some information on Drummer Scott ("Doodie" as I have watched him play in and around Long Beach for several years. He is widely acknowledged as the best drummer
in that scene. From Baltimore, he started playing in Long Beach in the Mid 90's with a now defunct but then amazing rock trio called Speaker.
They were signed to Capricorn in the early days of 311 when Capricorn was sinking all their money into that band. Speaker released
"Orizaba" (named after the long beach street on which Speaker and the Bong Leach collective maintained an underground performance warehouse)
in 1999 without much, if any, label support. This is a link to a brief bio on Speaker: http://entertainment.msn.com/artist/?artist=166893. I think you can hear snips on this site. Modern Drummer magazine called Scott's
performance on Speaker's "Orizaba" one of the ten best rock performances of the year and had many nice things to say about his
bangin'.
Rich Mauser produced "Orizaba" and also produced Oleander. This was Scott's hook-up with Oleander after Speaker dis-banded. I never
liked Oleander but thought Scott did well for them.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for Scott. He was the driving force behind the flowering of so much good music in Long Beach and is single
handedly responsible for the success and continuation of "The Space" in the shipping industry-- LA harbor docks of lower west side of Long
Beach--it is the red-headed step child to the original Bong Leach Collective performance space (on Orizaba Street) which has now grown up to be an
8,000 square foot warehouse/showcase that, although still underground, has the two best sound stages in Long Beach, the best lighting, and the best
vibe. They hold monthly gatherings where 20 bands from LB and otherwheres play. These parties are major productions and Scott runs the show when he
is there. He organizes the bands, the sound, lights, recording, security, refreshments--and he usually sits in for several of the bands.
The Space tends to falter when Scott is out on tour, so IMA ROBOT and fans should know that you are getting Scott on loan from a large community of
his friends, compatriots, admirers and beneficiaries, all whom send him off gladly but miss him dearly as well.
As for his abilities behind the kit, he is world class and a member of the same league as Joey, whom I have also watched live many many times and
admire. His greatest strengths are his enthusiasm and its infectious quality, and the way that he loves and plays to the songs themselves.
It was indeed sad to see Joey go. But I think you will all come to love and appreciate Scott and what his
blue-collar-work-ethic-sit-in-the-mother-funky-pocket-and-carry-the-beat style will bring to IMA ROBOT.
If any of you are there, I will see you at the KC show on Dec. 15th.
Tom Rotert
P.S. Scott is affectionately known as "Doodie." Somewhere along the way he picked up a used snare drum. Someone had written on the drum
head with a sharpie all the various ways to say "Shit." In the middle of the drum there was, prominently scribbled, the word:
"DOODIE" and it stuck as a nick name after that.MichelleRene - 12-15-2003 at 10:51 AM
Wow "Doodie" is from Baltimore!
I just saw them play Saturday at Fletchers in Baltimore and tried to get a few photos of him playing. I looked for him after the show but wasn't
successful.
Wow! I thought "Doodie" did a great job Saturday-full of energy! You're so lucky you get to see them tonight in Kansas City! Have a
blast!!! (P.S. tell them to come back to Baltimore!)draconian - 12-15-2003 at 05:00 PM
Wow, thanks for all that info. So nice to not have to track it down or grill the poor guy after a show about all the nuances of his professional
career! If you don't mind, I'm going to add your contribution to the FAQ, and credit you there...
