Ima Robot
Operating on their own unique circuits
The Skinny
Embellished by synthetic beats, freaky grooves and an almost campy stage swagger, Ima Robot is unpredictably eccentric, yet it still feels like a
well-oiled machine.
Despite the name, Ima Robot is anything but cold or droidish. Singer Alex Ebert is an androgynous glamour boy who shakes, prances and sings with a
dramatic vim and vigor. His charisma and uniquely shrill pipes are pumped up by the wild rhythms of bassist Justin Melda-Johnsen, who effortlessly
elaborates on new wave, synth-pop and glitter rock. The band's self-titled Virgin debut has gotten them heaped in with dance-happy romantics like
Hot Hot Heat and The Rapture, and more artsy electroclash mashers like Electric Six--but really, this is a rock 'n roll band in the experimental
spirit of Bowie and Devo.
