TIFD: 4 Out Of 5

From TIFD.com:

Artist: Ima Robot
Title: Ima Robot
Label: Virgin America
Release Date: 19/04/04
Rating: ****
The whole 80s thing could be wearing a bit thin by now, and bands trying to be edgy and quirky certainly are. So a quirky, edgy band with strong tinges of 80s stylings...?

Fantastic. Thats what you should be thinking. Ima Robot, if you haven't already jumped on the bandwagon, have that kind of inherent freshness and immediacy which you just can't manufacture. Through the anthemic 'Alive' and 'Scream' to the quite frankly mad 'A is for Action' every single note seems as vital and important as the last.

Mixing melodic punk with synth pop before sticking it into the electronic blender of weird noises works far, far better on record than it does on paper, and nowhere is this shown better than on '12 = 3 (Here Come The Doctors)'. Kicking off all beats and electronica, it isn't long before you're thrown headfirst into an almost angelic chorus, closely followed by some skiffle drum action. Quite what kind of sick mind thinks up this kind of thing is beyond us, but we like it.
