Highvoltage: 9/10

Here's one from Highvoltage:

Ima Robot - "Ima Robot"
Released: September 16, 2003
Rating: 9/10

"With a name as bizarre as Ima Robot, it is natural to assume that their sound would be just as unusual... and you would be right. This five piece band from LA feeds the part of our brain that craves the atypical with their self-titled major label debut. There couldn't be a better title for this album, Ima Robot is Ima Robot. The band gift wraps this package of zany sounds, post punk vibes, glitters it with 80s rock and adds a dab of pure rock that leaves you hitting repeat until your fingers go numb. Yes, it's been done.

The album kicks off with the infectious "Dynomite," which starts you on an upward groove from your chair (eventually spreading you out, bouncing in the room). From the first second, Alex Ebert (lead singer) grabs you with his unique voice. The first line "Here’s a story for the kids" cues you in for what’s yet to come. The song steals lines from old children rhymes and half melodies, such as "This Old Man..." but this is no children's album. The song "Dirty Life" is enough to justify the album’s Parental Advisory label. I'll let your imagination run free regarding that one. Some of the tracks warrant more than one listen, such as "12=3 (Here Come The Doctors)" and "Here Comes The Bombs," but you soon grow to love them as much as the rest of the tracks.

Don't be fooled though, the album has its slow moments. "Scream" shows off the band's more "structured" sound and sensitive side. They still manage to throw in some atmospheric elements which help prevent the album from losing its distinctive effectiveness. "What Are We Made From" is slow and spacey, a song you would listen to when taking off... granted you have a space ship and a suit. You still cannot help but enjoy it. The song is a grand finale to a great album... until you are caught off guard with "Black Jettas," a fun and corky hidden track that functions as a reminder as to why you love the album in the first place.

Each track has its identifiable sound but as a whole the album works as a nice blend of new and old elements. Ima Robot, definitely a unique band with a unique sound that is sure to create more great albums. Remember the name. Buy the album. And practice responsible repeat methods... for your fingers' sake."
