The rediscovery of new wave music created a rush of modern bands with a flair for channeling '80s sounds through a new millennial makeup, and
opened the door to lighthearted rock acts with a goofball fetish. Los Angeles' Ima Robot falls into both categories, as the new-wave/punk hybrid
that's big on a flashy, almost over-the-top dedication to the fashionable new wave revival as well as a lighthearted approach to songwriting
that's a perfect foil to the dead-serious sounds of similar acts such as Hot Hot Heat and The Rapture.
The band kicked it around in the Southern California music scene in a number of previous and highly forgettable incarnations, though never sparked
until it added synthesizers and a zany sense of absurdity. While the band's output won't place it on the punk-wave's top shelf next to
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Hot Hot Heat, the act's simplified, pop-ready take on the style is a good introduction to the new-wave/punk explosion for
the complete novice. -- Matt Schild
