A pretty nice album review in from
Theaquinian.ca --though the writer seems to have little foresight about Ima Robot's ability to evolve:
"What if you were a Robot?
Ima Robot – Self Titled Debut Virgin Records
Craig M. Johnson
The Aquinian
The best way to describe this band is that they are like chalk and cheese. Ima Robot is one wacky band who has artistically melted together music
genres that most would not dare unite. The Los Angeles based group of five has a noise containing the energy of punk, the zest of 80’s rock and a
twist of synthetic-pop. This debut album proves that being weird is more than just wearing mismatched socks on Wednesdays. Their unique attitude and
idea of what rocks is seen through the entirealbum.
Lead singer Alex Ebert’s unique fashion compares to the likes of HawksleyWorkman and Howlin’ Pelle of the Hives. Their bass player Justin
Meldal-Johnsen adds afunky foundation, guitarist Timmy ‘the terror’ Anderson leaves the taste of 70’s metalin your mouth. Joey Waronker drums like
he’s in a punk band with ingenious beats whilekeyboardist Oliver Goldstein adds the feeling of plastic pants to an otherwise garagesound. Their songs
fall under a wide scope; their debut single “Dynamite” is powerful andcatchy but also has that bit of radio quality. Their weirder and more
interesting songsare what the album is made of. Songs like “A Is For Action” and “Here Come The Bombs” are loaded with lyrics and a wild sound that
together throws our pathetic society inyour face. Then again, there are times throughout the album where they seem to forgetthey are suppose to be
unique and end up sliding into songs like “Scream” that makeyou wonder if you are in fact listing to U2. The band is most definitely talented, but
unfortunately I can’t see them coming backwith a second album. Their sound is a trend, and they will most likely ride off intothe sunset as fast as
they rode in. However, if you are looking for something a little off the beaten path and are tired of listening to your Smash Mouth album from Jr.
High, I highly recommend you check out Ima Robot."
