The MTV Campus Invasion Tour performance at Clarke College, on Wednesday, in the Robert and Ruth Kehl Center will be the only Iowa stop on the tour .
Clarke College and the Clarke Student Association are hosting the stop, which features H****stank, Ima Robot and Lost Prophet.
H****stank, which includes guitarist Dan Estrin, bassist Markku Lappalainen, drummer Chris Hesse and singer Doug Robb, is touring in support of its
sophomore album, "The Reason." It features the hit "Out Of Control" and the group's new single "The Reason."
"The tour's going great," drummer Hesse said, in a phone interview.
"The other bands are fun to be around and watch. We've toured with Lost Prophets before. I have a lot of fun. This is what we play music
for, the large audiences, lots of people," he said. "And we hang out every evening around the barbecue pit."
He said "Crawling in the Dark" and "Running Away" were among the songs getting the best response from the audiences.
"And yes, they sing along very, very loud. Sometimes I can't hear the song."
H****stank will be going on a European tour for about a month after the MTV tour. Hesse can't imagine a different career.
"I stopped going to college, because I wasn't interested in anything else but music," he said.
"Last night was amazing," Ima Robot lead singer Alex Ebert said in a phone interview.
"Sometimes gigs with heavy metal can be a little weird," he said, saying most of the crowds seemed to be there to see H****stank and Lost
Prophets. "But we're seeing a lot of converts and fans. It's good for us to have to confront our demons and overcome them."
Six-year-old Ima Robot is on tour in support of its self-titled debut album.
"Not much has changed (in six years)," Ebert said. "We're slightly more mature and more experienced." The current group
includes guitarist Tim Anderson, bassist Justin Meldal-Johnson, Oliver Goldstein on keyboards and guitar and drummer Scott Devours.
After the MTV tour, Ima Robot will head to a European tour with The Von Bondies.
"Then we come back and relax in late May, and then we go on the Warp Tour."
MTV's "Choose or Lose 2004" campaign is part of the Campus Invasion Tour. This year the campaign is dedicated to mobilizing more than
20 million young adults aged 18 to 30 to vote in the 2004 election.
Ebert said when he performs, he often asks the audience how many are registered to vote.
"Last night, it was pretty dismal," Ebert said. He enjoys being able to talk to people while on tour, especially about politics.
"My own personal views are a little different than most," he said. "Checks and balances needs to come back. It's been thrown away
in this country. All authority ought to be questioned in a smart way, although sometimes there's reasons for authority."
MTV's Campus Invasion 2004 will also feature MTV host Flx and music from DJ Rob Dinero.
One-thousand tickets for the Clarke tour stop at Clarke will be available at a student rate of $17. Students must show a valid college or high school
ID to purchase student-rate tickets. General public tickets are $22 and all seats are general admission.
Tickets are available at the Clarke College Whitlow Bookstore, 563/588-6307, and all Dubuque CDs 4 Change locations.
