installing linux on my ps3 sound like a bad idea?

i have no clue but basically it would turn it into a pc. which would be cool. but the ps3 only has 256 mb of RAM. so i think it would be kinda slow. opinions?

That would be interesting... I would try running it from a live boot CD if you can first to see if it works properly. Try out Ubuntu, that's my fav! The boot CD's run entirely in the ram though so 256 is going to make it pathetically slow....

Ubuntu is like too user friendly for me. I like to learn the stuff myself. Idk if the live cd would work on it. I would LOVE to mod the user interface on my DVR. It uses a form of linux. Tivo. But i don't think putting linux on it would be too smart of an idea. Especially not for you (no offense) but you don't know what your doing as much as beedun and i do and linux is a powerful operating system and could potentially fry your ps3, meaning it wouldn't be able to do anything anymore.

they have one built for ps3 smart guy. i'm not dumb enough to try and put computer OS on my ps3.

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/power/library/pa-linuxps3-...

there's the instructions n' stuff.

it's also built to allow another OS on it.

Here -> http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/index.html

i can only imagine it running slow if you tried running alot of applications on it. i'm not retarded, IMAKFRIED.

Well Sor-ry. It would be good if you had a keyboard for it. Then that's definately not a bad idea, except that it would most likely void the warranty.

No i mean installing linux on it will void the warranty.... DUH. Of course plugging a keyboard into it doesn't void it.
Otherwise keyboads on game consoles wouldn't be so popular.

no.. it doesn't void the warranty. like i said before, its MEANT to have another os on there. theres an option. if it would void the warranty they wouldn't have it as an option.

You can also update the hard drive in the PS3 with any other hard drive ~ as long as its the same interface (SATA I believe). So you can crap out the 40GB or 60GB it comes with and put in a monster 1TB. I also read that the PS3 recently put into place the ability to play XVID codec'd movies. This is huge as all the movies I pirate are XVID's...... WooHooo Piratebay!

If i'm understanding this conversation right, beedun and skg are talking about hard drives, while justy is over here talking about where to find torrents.... am i right? Cause i'm a little confused here on how hard drives and torrents relate to each other....

Piratebay is a torrent site and i was stating that I mostly use Isohunt. and he uses Torrents to get DVD's to put onto his hard drive.

piratebay.org
mininova.org
torrentreactor.net
tvrss.net
isohunt.com is great too but I never use it as I always find what I want on piratebay or mininova.

Like it really matters what site you use anyways they all pretty much have the same data/files.....

Bottom line is the PS3 is pretty much a computer/home theater PC/Blue Ray Player/Gaming machine all bundled up into 1 device that kicks ass even if it costs about $600. All of these feature easily justify the cost. I just bought parts to build a new PC with graphical power above the PS3 and the pricing came to about $620 for some very nice components. It would probably cost another $200-$300 to turn it into a blu-ray DVR on top of that price. If anyone wants the specs just ask..

Supposedly the PS3 is going to have another upgrade to it in the future to make it a DVR as well, making it even more worthwhile.

I WANT ONE!

You can put a bigger hard drive in a PS3...
PS3's Play pirated movies hence the need for a bigger hard drive
You can put LInux on the PS3 withouth problems.
